A Tragic Start to the Labor Day Weekend on Oahu (Honolulu County) Hawaii | Safety FIRST!

Four soldiers stationed at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa, Oahu (Honolulu County), Hawaii were able to walk out to Mokolii Island, best known as “Chinaman’s Hat”, during low tide yesterday at about 1pm. They decided to head back to Kuoloa Beach Park on the Windward side of Oahu during high tide and ran into trouble.

You can read more about the tragedy here:

Two dead after being swept away in waters near Chinaman's Hat

Though we are at risk of injury every day during our lifetime please take extra precautions when going on activities in the ocean or even hiking in our mountains.  The channel between Mokolii Island (Chinaman’s Hat) and Kualoa has very strong currents during the rising tide the currents can easily tire the best of swimmer’s.

Hawaii’s Visitors and Residents | BE SAFE Not Sorry

Remember when the movie "Jaws" first came out in 1975?  Okay, most of you may not have been born yet but it was a pretty scary movie for me.  All my years prior I was a ‘beach freak' and you could always catch me on the beach at Laniakea. I would also go swimming far enough out that I could float on my back and just hear a little ripple of the waves on a nice summer day.

It all came to a screeching halt after that movie and I would only go in shallow water just to ‘cool off'.

A few months later my boyfriend was surfing and he was paddling in like he had a fire on his behind.  So were the others behind him.  He said there was a tiger shark out there. That pretty much ended his surfing for years but he later took up body boarding so he was closer to shore.

  • A warning sign is posted in the parking lot by Halona Blowhole which is located right before Sandy Beach on the east side of Oahu. In 2002, a teenager walked along the shore line from Sandy Beach to get to the natural water spout. The spout lifted him up 3-5 feet in the air and flipped him upside-down and dropped him head first into the rocky crevice.
  • Charles Casados was a local Hawaii real estate entrepreneur and court appointed foreclosure commissioner for the state of Hawaii. He loved the ocean. His daughter Stephanie was well loved in Jefferson Elementary school and according to the news she loved ballet, fishing, tennis and golf. They both were found dead near the Makapu'u tide pools in 2011.
  • In 2005, a teenager jumping off the Big Rock at Waimea Bay on the North Shore was on life support after jumping off and hitting the rock. He died a little over 3 weeks later.
  • A short walk away to Waimea Falls brought news in 1997 of a professional cliff diver who died jumping off the cliff above into the pond. His head hit a rock protruding slightly above the water's surface. Seven other deaths occurred between 1952 through 1976 at this very site.

These are only a few deadly instances that happened on our island.

No matter where you go around the world there are precautions and warnings to take heed to. Research the areas you are visiting or relocating to if you value your life. We take chances in life in everything we do from getting behind the wheel of a car to diving into a pool. We don't need to take foolish risks with our lives by doing the daredevil scenarios with nature.

Your personal safety is only as good as your taking responsibility...

.... around our oceans, mountains and valleys.

Use your good judgment when around nature's beauty.

It could turn deadly.
