Ride the Wild Surf! Sunset Beach, North Shore of Oahu

 Honolulu County Beaches

Sunset Beach, North Shore of Oahu Hawaii

Okay, we got there a little late for the big surf but there were still a few surfers out catching the baby waves that were left over from the morning swell. Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore is one of the longest sandy beaches on the island. Running two miles long and 300 feet wide it makes for a great way to spend the day.....sunbathing, snorkeling or during winter swells...just standing back and watching the surfers.

Every winter there are surfing competitions all along the North Shore but Sunset Beach is one of the most famous. During the summer months the glassy water is a wonderful contrast to the tropical blue skies but don't let those calm waters fool you because it is notorious for riptide currents at Sunset Beach.

Hawaii State Government Ocean Safety site will give you loads of info to keep safe regardless if you are newcomers to the island or long time residents. Not only do we have to watch for ocean undertows but we also have times where there will be a swarm of  jellyfish 8-10 days after a full moon on the west and south shores.
