ALL THINGS REAL ESTATE!

Some may tend to believe that Real Estate talk means only short sales, buyers, sellers, loans and so forth. I'm a Real Estate Industry Professional but I'm darn sure human.  And that means I can adjust my thinking and my attitude to any market, conversation, challenge because I AM a chameleon.

Being a chameleon means I can adapt to my surroundings.

Regardless of where I am ....when it comes to ‘All Things Real Estate'..... I can take into consideration what real estate means at any given place and time. While blogging on ActiveRain,  I grasped the concept that ‘All Things Real Estate' meant to write about  ‘All Things Real Estate' too.

Open your mind to the possibilities of what "All Things Real Estate" really means.

My Local Area:  No matter what branch of the Real Estate Industry we are directly connected with our communities, counties and state and everything happening in our area. We have to have knowledge about the businesses,  events, history, neighborhoods and more. We need to know where to direct the consumer when they want to know where the elementary school is in conjunction with the geographical location of the home they're thinking of purchasing. What about the local restaurants and the gym?

Yes, it's a lot of work to research and write about our local area but in the end.....

I AM THE AREA EXPERT.

I opened my mind to grasp the concept that ‘All Things Real Estate' went beyond the scope of just Real Estate knowledge. It meant that I had to know more about everything and anything in my area. It meant that I needed to get more educated on not just Real Estate...but my local area of expertise.

Are you adapting like a chameleon with "All Things Real Estate"?

Are you the LOCAL EXPERT?

Cooked by the Sun! Sharks Cove on the North Shore

crab

The crab in the picture had a little too much sun and got cooked right there on the rock!

Sharks Cove is a giant reef located on the North Shore of the island of Oahu and a great place for snorkeling & scuba diving. The crystal clear water depicts the awesome views of marine life in their natural environment that you are bound to see under the surface of the ocean.

With Spring already here and Summer approaching, this is the best time to snorkel as the waters are calm. (unlike during the winter when the waves go up and over the rocks) At the end of the reef the ocean drops off to about 25 feet.

Tip:  Wear shoes!  The rock and coral formations are definitley hard on the tootsies! Watch out for the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (endangered species) and White Tipped Reef Sharks.

Picture above was taken in November of 2007 at Sharks Cove. (Kathy McGraw came to visit :) What a difference between Winter Swells and Spring Calm waters :)

Historic Haleiwa Town & Ancient Hawaiian Temples-VIDEOS

You've walked with me through the Historic Honolulu County Hawaii - Club Chaos Eye Candy post and my pictorial of Historic Sites in Honolulu County. Now you will really see a few sites in video......and be there right beside me....

Historic Haleiwa Town:  In 1898 Benjamin Dillingham (a businessman) opened a hotel on the North Shore of Oahu and named it Haleiwa (Ha le ee va), Hale meaning house and iwa is a frigatebird.  With many preserved old buildings this old town makes for a wonderful destination for tourists.  Anahulu Stream Bridge, also known as Rainbow Bridge is on the north entrance to Haleiwa town. It is also listed as one of the historic bridges of the United States.

Pu'u o Mahuka is the largest heiau (ancient temple/religious site) on Oahu (island I live and Honolulu County) and covering almost two acres. They say the village must have been constructed in the 1600's and built with three walled enclosures. The rock walls are stacked from 3-6 feet height and the interior paved with stone.  It was most likely used as a sacrificial temple...maybe for success in war? This was a time of political upheaval and in 1795 Kamehameha I conquered Oahu  and his high priest Hewahewa (he va he va) conducted religious ceremonies here.

Hale o Lono Heiau is a temple that was excavated and dates between 1470 A.D and 1700 A.D. and located in Waimea Falls Park. Dedicated to the god Lono who was the god of agriculture, harvests, weather, sports and medicine.

Our historical sites and history surrounding our islands is mysterious, exotic and educational ...to say the least. Come join us and experience the rich history in our tropical paradise.

Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal Spotted on the North Shore of Oahu!

Ahhhh...hard to believe that amidst the splashing and laughing and playful antics surrounding Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu that there would be a Hawaiian Monk Seal bathing in the sun. Oblivious to all going on around it, this Endangered Species is taking advantage of a beautiful tropical day to catch a tan (haha) and few winks.

Where the population of the Monk Seal used to be high, it has decreased 11% per year since 1989 and is the MOST endangered marine mammal in the United States. One of the main factors for their decrease in population is contributed to discarded fish nets and lines that the monk seals get entagled in. Another contributing factor is that the Laysan and Lisianski male seals are attacking the females and the deaths are up to 10 to 11 seals on Laysan alone which is 4% of the island's populations.  READ MORE HERE>

Lately, they seem to be all over our islands...stopping to rest on any old beach. Just remember though, Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act it is considered a violation and called "harassment" if you are walking along the beach and a Monk Seal lifts its head and vocalizes or retreats into the water because you disrupted it. WOW.

In any event, they are just the cutest yet most wonderous creatures you would lay eyes on. My daughter was out at Waimea Bay beach two weeks ago and lo and behold there was this creature (yes, she GAVE ME the picture :) and she snapped me a shot.

Everyone can help respect the Hawaiian Monk Seal by:

  • Respecting the privacy of the seal.
  • Stay at least 150 feet away from the seal
  • Keep dogs on a leash so they do not disrupt or attack seals.
  • Fishing by being seal friendly
  • Report all monk seal sightings by calling NOAA hotline numbers. (Oahu call 220-7802; Neighbor Islands call toll free 888-256-9840)

Historic Haleiwa Town: North Shore-Oahu, Hawaii

On the way to north shoreWhat a way to spend a September 3, 2007 Labor Day but to jump in my car and cruise down to the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii!  Being a Realtor Associate® on Oahu is a luxury and I surely don't take it forgranted. No matter where I take my clients there is going to be breathtaking scenery all around us and we have laws of the land to abide by such as in this post:  Purchasing Hawaii Vacant Land? Ancient Hawaiian Burial Sites and Laws

I had been cooped up in the house for two days resting my injured back. I woke up refreshed for the first time in two days and I did my morning ritual of checking my Active Rain blog for comments to respond to and so forth.

A quick trip to the grocery store and I thought, "I can't sit here all day again" And off I went! T-shirt, jeans, camera and me. It's a ME Day! So I drive from Waipio Gentry, through Mililani, past Wheeler Army Air Base (Schofield Barracks is right behind it), through Wahiawa town and voila! Driving down the Highway I snapped the picture above because from here it opens up to a gorgeous view of the ocean and the first peek at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii that's pictured in the distance.

 Haleiwa Boat Harbor and Beach

Entering Historic Haleiwa town. Haleiwa (Home of the Iwa bird) was a sugar plantation town for over 100 years until 1996 Wailua Sugar (Oahu's last sugar plantation) shut down. Haleiwa remained "country" and in 1984 Haleiwa was designated a Historic, Cultural and Scenic District. Shopping and places of interest:

  • North Shore Market Place
  • Surf and Cultural Museum
  • Haleiwa Shopping Plaza
  • Wyland's Art Gallery
  • Haleiwa Art Gallery
  • Boutiques and Shops along the main street
  • Haleiwa Joe's Restaurant (In 1899 this was a luxury 40 room hotel!)
  • Shell Craft stands and more! (below)

 Shell Craft Stand Haleiwa

I passed the Haleiwa Boat Harbor to the beach and got out to take some pictures. Above is the boat harbor with the Waianae Mountain Range in the background.

  • The Hawaii Shark Tours in Haleiwa was owned by notorious daredevil and shark feeder Jimi Hall who passed away in May of 2007 when he was filming himself parachuting off a 4,000 foot cliff  on Baffin Island and slammed into the side of the mountain.

Kawailoa Ranch HaleiwaLocated right outside of Historic Haleiwa Town is the Kawailoa Ranch and they offer a wide range of boarding options. The North Shore of Oahu is also known for its history of ranching and farming too!

Kawailoa Ranch, Co.
61-676 Kam. Hwy., Haleiwa, HI 96712
phone: (808) 637-4224

The ranch was also conveniently located right before (and across the street) from the beach I was heading to so I pulled over to the right when I saw these horses grazing. Back in the 1970's (as a teenager) this ranch was the owned by the Meadow Gold Dairy. We would drive in and there was a small little petting zoo and a big milk cow. We would stop and tease the monkeys in the cage and pet the goat and peer at the cow. I watched the horses for awhile just minding their own business and oblivious to my presence and then went on my way. Laniakea Beach

Let's go surfin' now, everybody's learning how, come on and safari with me!  (beach boys surfin safari 1962)

Laniakea Beach, North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii- Paradise of the Honu (sea turtle) watchers. Laniakea is also known for surfing and fishing and this was my favorite beach as a teen. (my high school boyfriend was an avid surfer)
