Blogging about "VOG" in Hawaii

"VOG" is Volcanic Air Pollution.  Oahu experiences "VOG" when trade winds change direction after there has been volcanic action on the island of Hawaii or otherwise known as the Big Island.  The winds will blow this volcanic air pollution towards us and make our little world look all hazy.

Following are pictures I took today from down the street from where I live in Waipio Gentry on the island of Oahu and viewing the downtown Honolulu area. In the far background is Diamond Head and usually there is an unobstructed view with blue clear skies.

View from "Cliffside Villages" to Pearl Harbor to Downtown Honolulu!

May 18, 2007 News story on Lava delta lost 23 acres in latest collapse (a chunk of Kileauea Volcano on the Big Island crashed into the ocean. Quote:  Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory had originally estimated the May 10 lava delta collapse at East Lae'apuki at 16 acres, but now say it's closer to 23. Also, new cracks in the lava delta have been observed, hinting at further collapses.

Hello Sally, I'm just worried, with all the VOG, that I won't be able to find my golf ball......

Now, thats a crack....As a property inspector, I'm afraid I am going to have to include that crack in the report :-)

Wow - I did not even know VOG existed!  Thanks for the explanation - Unfortunately, the pollution we have in Miami has nothing to do with any natural wonders - it's all man-made.

Ginger:  Look at you with your flower lei!  Thanks for sharing the pic...and this is rare for us to have so much vog...it's supposed to clear up by tonight!

Ines (and Rick) We just get that once in awhile....don't you folks have wind that blows away the pollution?

Robert:  I'll have you go golfing with mom...she's 79 and whoops men's butts!

Pete:  Yeah, I haven't been to the Big Island since High School....haha!

Steph: It'll be gone by tomorrow. Natural occurances.

Fortunately when I was on the Big Island last year there was no VOG. It was a beautiful island - no time to drive to the volcano, and too windy to fly to it.

Well your lot value just went up!! Even when the volcano's are going Hawaii is pretty.

Sharon: The vog hits when there's a bunch of action going on and comes this way when trade winds change directions.

Ethan:  Yeah.,..all our lot values go up (supposedly) every year around assessment time..hahaha.

I've been getting nothing but migraines, sore throat and bronchitis since the VOG went up. I feel terrible..I hope it subsides soon. From the Big Island

The vog has been really bad on Oahu...worse than the pictures above from last year.  Sometimes it can be as bad as an industrial area type pollution. Take care Laura.

Ive lived on the big island for 17 years and every year the vog seems to be getting worse.  I constainly live with migraines, virtago and extremely tired.   I have noticed my tongue burning when it's voggy.   I'm ready to move off this rock.

My family doctor hasn't given me any advise, only pills and shots.  I went to a ear nose and throat  doctor that recently moved to the big island. Prior to moving here he did some research on the health effects of the vog and  didn't find anything, although in talking with him he said that there were more cases of liver and throat cancer here than anywhere. He thought maybe it could be something in the water and wanted to do a more research.   Makes you wonder if  it isn't related to the vog.  I personally don't think they would ever tell us if they found out.  Property values & tourism would go to hell.

Carol,

What I found that helps a little is to sleep with an air purifer and air conditioning.

That is really interesting. We have a similar type of pollution in Texas (not from a volcano) . In Mexico at certain time of the year thousand of acres of sugar cane are set ablaze prior to harvest and the pacific winds push the smoky haze northeast in to Texas. Kind of a pain especially for anyone who spend time outdoors.

OK I understand VOG is Volcanic smog...correct why don't they call it VAP for Volcanic air pollution? Oh never mind it's still "smoke in your eyes!

Great post.  I just heard about VOG. We are thinking about moving out there. I have a son that has asthma. How does this affect that, and also, which areas are better, worse?  Are there a lot of property management companies there?

THanks for the post.
