Two signs depict the very essence of the items in the picture taken at Bishop Museum.
The Whole Story is forthcoming.

That's quite a tease you have there, Sally, since we can't see either sign! Now I want to know the rest of the story (as Paul Harvey used to say).
Sally... is it a prehistoric bird bath? or just a bird bath made out of rock? Inquiring minds want to know.. ;o)
Sally, What do the signs say ? I'm curious. It is a beautiful picture.
Sally - You have peaked my interest with this one. I am interested to see what those signs say!
Is that the story about the Missionary with the Leper Colony?
Sally,
O.K., I give up; what is it? Hawaiin bird bath or fountain?
Sally,
I'm in! I'll be back to hear the rest of the story. :)
Mike in Tucson
A mosquito breading ground? Inquiring minds want to know!
Is that a bird I see carved on the front edge of this bird bath? Put there so some bird brain would know what it was? I wonder.
Sally, Being as I am an "out of the box" thinker, it looks as if it might be for medicinal purposes - such as an old pestle and mortar like old druggists used to use...

The signs says. . "Get closer when taking pictures"
thanks for sharing your picture with us today. Keep up the great work
OK, I am waiting! I can guess a million things that it is or isn't.... but now I know all about the Bishops Museum. I am really really really glad that you didn't take pictures of Backyard Monsters!
Sally - a vey nice picture, but such a big tease! When do we get the rest of the story?
Is that a bird bath?
OK now you are just messing with us! lol :)
your friend in Charlottesville Virginia!
Sally, I know that if Willie the Labradoodle saw this picture he would think it was a dog water dish!
Sally,
You win, I don't have a clue as to what this is. I'll be back to read the real story.
Connie Lou
Sally OK now that you have everybody asking what the signs say, come clean with it and tell us :) :)
Great picture, I can't wait for the rest of the story. Have a great weekend.
Sally - Ok what's it all about anyways? I can't read the sign even if I blow it up.... Will be waiting for this story. I actually did a post years ago with the same title, different concept of course though... ha ha... We will be waiting here.....
Heather: Not supposed to see the sign.. you were to guess what both signs are representing lol!
Spencer: Guess what the picture is!
Jason: Only the signs? what about the stuff in the picture? lol
Liz: Nope...but I did write a story about Father Damien before :)
Terry: Hmmm...I guess you could use it for those anyway :)
Mike: Pretty soon....soon. :)
Hahaha Mark.
Fernando: Gong!
Michael: Good guess but not quite...there are two signs :)
Jim: hahaha
Harry: Thank you...keep up the good work :)
Andrea: Oh...I can do that too...I'll just go up to mom's back yard/valley :)
Mike: Right after I read the rest of the comments :)
Neal: If you wanted it to be :)
Charles: Okay okay...I'll get to it
Pat: Oh, I'm sure he would!
Okay Connie!
George: Come 'clean' ..... I'm thinking you're thinking it's that bath lol
Terry: Okay...and you have a good weekend too!
bob: The whole point. You were supposed to guess..not strain your eyes! LOL!
Okay Folks ...you wanted to know what the signs said and what they represent?
the Bishop Museum has loads of historical stuff inside ...and outside around the grounds as well.
The sign says "Grinding Stone Hawaiian Islands. Stones like this were used in making or sharpening stone tools."
So folks, it isn't a bird bath and Michael...it could have had something similar for grinding medicinal plants and such.
The blue sign says
U'ulei - Osteomeles anthyllidifolia Native (Indigenous) this native member of the rose family is common sight on dry ridges. The rough wood was used for digging sticks and fishing spears, and the pliable branches were fashioned into fishnet hoops.
Interesting huh?
I can't wait to hear the rest. I miss living in Hawaii but plan on coming back in 4 years. I will look you up
Shelton
Shelton: I just put up the story right before your comment :)
Celeste - Very neat thanks for sharing the rest of the story...I was confounded before I read your last comment.
Sally I almost made refference to the shower in the last comment, but I said to myself ..... naaaaaaaaa, but now that you brought it up .............. :) :) :)
Sally, I was trying to figure it out before I got to the answer. I would have guessed it was something sacred in one way or another (and I would have been wrong). Thanks for sharing, it is interesting.
I can't wait to hear the story. Geez. And I thought I was bad with my manatee face.
Sally, This stone looks similar to the ones used to grind taro. Thank you for bringing back the positive memories.
Sally- I love history, how interesting! I always look forward to more history and cultural lessons from you.
