This is interesting Sally.  Thanks for putting it this way.  From that perspective I think you're right.  MJ was successful in his music.  But of course his life, at least as it looked to me was more of a tragedy. 

I heard a former Seattle P.I. reporter talking today about an interview she had with him when he was still pretty young.  She asked him if he missed not being able to just be a kid.  He looked at her confused.  He said the only place he felt like himself was on that stage.

Anyway, I hear both sides to the ooh's and awww's of his death. The bottom line was he was a very successful (money) person in his younger years but missed his childhood and his 'growing up'.  I believe that about what he said to the reporter. That's all he knew. And people only grow or do the best they know how.

So what is that success worth? He had many addictions (looking outside self) to try and fill the void he had inside. All the stuff in the world couldn't fill that void he had inside. I'd been there and know what it's like to be empty....therefore can relate.

Interesting post.  If everyone were grounded, we would have no problems, no wars, no killing.

That truly would be heaven on Earth.

Those that are not grounded, resort to greed out of fear, which starts the whole cycle of problems.

By the way, how is the market in Hawaii?

Sally, great thoughts for sure. I was not a big fan, never cared for the style of music. Not to say I don't give him his due, he had an amazing impact on the music world.

His personal afflictions were painful to watch and you just knew how much he was suffering.

Quincy Jones is clearly a very smart man and how many other stars have we seen die early because of them not being prepared or grounded enough to be ready for the success once it was plundged upon them.

Makes me wonder about the parents. Who were the greedy ones and driven for "success". I think MJ and his siblings were exploited.

I found your title interesting having just wrote my own take on the meaning of success.

I have always felt sorry for him because I don't think he's had much happiness and we all know it does not come from money and fame.

So true Sally.  As a society we sometime value the wrong things.  Michael was a poor unfortunate soul and those of us who value true success need to feel sorry that his life was so empty.  He was truly ill and noone helped him in a positive way.

I know what it means to have a serious and grounded approach towards life and the meaning of being a terminal for a higher power. I can feel it and it shines from the inside of me to the outside. That success can't be bought and it can only be fulfilled by ......ME.

What is all the outside of me stuff worth...if I feel not me?

Ralph:  But alas...it's what makes the world 'balanced' ... too much of something is not a good thing either is it?  Those that are not grounded and whom resort to greed out of fear... it starts deeper than that. It's the whole inner strength that was never there. The sense of self that was not learned. The knowing that everything starts with inside..the self..the soul is the essence of who I am. Who you are.

Market ....sales numbers are up all over Oahu (Honolulu County) and getting better.

Andrea: the whole thing about ths is that I liked some of his music but thought he was such a talented individual ...who did not find the true meaning of....life. 

George: Quincy sure is. Just by his demeanor shows that he long ago knew the secret to success.

James: No matter what the case...each individual has the capacity to change the beliefs instilled from younger years. It does take hard work and dedication but the work doesn't stop either. We are born..innocent and only through taught lessons do we learn ...

Sally, interesting perspective with the electrical terminal and being grounded. It can be hard to be grounded with massive money and fame, but some like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have handled it so it is not an impossibility. With Michael Jackson it seems like a part of him was lost and never could find that grounding.

Paddy: But as individuals we do have the ability to change it around. The fear of the unknown stops many from doing so...the comfortabilty in staying stuck in old thinking...the uncomfortable feelings of trying something new.

June: We all have our own way to give the public, our peers, friends and neighbors a piece of us through our writing, our interactions and so forth. It's when one side of the interacting party has no sense of the true meaning of 'self' there can be no true 'success'....therefore....is there a true relationship going on?

Judy: Believe me...it was harder to change my thinking around (about me) as I'd believed the worst for so long...that it takes continuous work indeed.

Lola: I loved your addition to this Lola..you ALWAYS add a provacative and meaningful dialogue.

Gary: so true...if it was lost and never found...it was an impossible dream. Takes loads of action to get to a point of being comfortable with self. And it sure doesn't come by things outside self.

I grew up with the Jackson 5. but when Michael Jackson went on his own I really didn't follow his music. Then he started to get really weird and still he was the most successful musician in the world. I think success also hurt him along with having such a tough childhood. I think he changed and he wasn't the most happy person inside...even though he was able to hide that with all his success. I'm sure he didn't want to die but we shall see what comes of this all.

Success and happiness run hand and hand. If you are happy with who and what you are, then you have made it father than most ever will regardless of economic standing.

Sara: Nice to know many understand the concept....sad that many don't....including in all walks of life..including our industry :)

Neal: Me too Neal (and yes, I too followed other music)  His success with money and fame only made the symptoms of his dis == ease worsen.  Believe me...many 'successful' businessmen/women can't hide when they aren't happy.

Sally success often gets confused with material possessions.  What good is to be able to buy what ever you want in the world, but not have peace and happiness in your life?

George: You're darn right about that....how many sales, how much money. I say....And? lol. I say that paying my bills and being responsible with my time, my family etc. makes me the richest lady (in my mind lol)

Well written! MJ was indeed a tragic figure and sad to see his demise at such a young age. Having personal freedom is more important than many folks realize, and all the money in the world cannot buy that or bring back a "missed childhood"

Sally - so damn true! Being well grounded is like having a foundation right? You need a foundation to build a home, just like you need to be grounded to have true happiness. Thanks for sharing..

Sadly ... success does not equate to happiness.  And that becomes more evident everyday.

My grandpa always said that success was in having 'enough'.  When I asked "enough of what?" he would only say ... enough.  I was much older when I realized that 'enough' is something different for each person.

Great post, isn't that true about life for all of us.  You may be dealing with fame, or just doing life.  I think with the current economic crisis people are being challenged, rich and poor in this climate today.  It all comes down to how you deal with it.  I tend to agree with Mr. Jones.

Sally, for one thing, you have to be true to yourself and not be a phoney.  After that, like you and Quincy Jones said, you have to be grounded and have good people around you.  In order to be successful, it takes more than just yourself as well.

I don't think any of us thought that Michael Jackson ever truly believed in his success--I think he hoped for it, but never felt he quite got there...very sad.

Sally - Isn't it sad tgat all the money, success & fame could not equal happiness? He was a man of many faces still trying to discover who he was on the inside right up until his death.
