Sally,  our finches are yellow and black at this time of year.  I have never seen ones like these.

Sally - I love finches. We have lots of them here, although they are not as colorful as the ones in Hawaii.

Wow, Sally!  Those little guys are beautiful!  I would never have guessed them to be finches, but ...

Around here we have the goldfinches and purple finches, but nothing like those.  Thanks for sharing so I could learn yet another bird!

Hi Sally - Those are gorgeous finches!  Obviously we don't have any Hawaiian finches in Fair Oaks, but we have some really colorful house finches (red and orange heads and chests) and goldfinches (canary yellow and black), as well as a lot of other birds, all of which eat together at our feeders.  We love our birds and other wild critters, and our cats are fascinated by them.

Range and Habitat

Java Sparrow: Found year round on Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii, common in urban areas. Prefers the grassy areas of parks and fields.

BTW Folks:

 

We got the feeder about a month ago...it took a couple weeks for the cardinals to find it....and the last week and a half the finches come for breakfast lunch and dinner!

 

So George...this is on my patio hanging from a iron rod hanger. :)
