What better way to write about a Hawaii Local Business except from first hand from experience? Leeward Acupuncture Center, Inc. and my acupuncturist/massage therapist, Diego Leong Roig is everyone's alternative medicine and health care provider!
I made a decision a year ago that would turn out to be the best ‘medical' decision of my life.
The turning point was realizing that there IS an alternative to drugs and operations for certain medical problems. There IS an alternative other than the regular series of standard medical practice for things that would only cause future problems..... And still not ‘cure' the original symptom.
Granted, there are some things that can't be ‘cured' although there IS alternative medicine and health care to relieve most of those aches and pains. I originally went to Diego Leong Roig because of my carpal tunnel and my foot had some kind of nerve damage that was causing severe pain and two numb toes. The doctors before said to wear braces at night and support during the day. Diego Leong Roig said no....that I was babying it and making it worse.
When your career relies on the computer, these two ailments cause interference with work.
After a few months of massage therapy (deep tissue massage) and acupuncture my carpal tunnel was so manageable that I could type comfortably again for hours on end. I eventually had to get cortisone shots in my foot (nerve damage) but the rest of my aches and pains are manageable with my acupuncture/massage therapy appointments every 3 weeks to get the ‘kinks' out.
It also takes a good ‘bedside manner' such as the kind Diego Leong Roig gives both me...and my husband (yes, he goes too!) and his demeanor, professional work ethics and his knowledge and experience are what keeps us going back to him. It also took the understanding that this process will not work ‘overnight' and is not a one shot deal. It's ongoing therapy without a bunch of drugs and healing naturally.
After doing the same thing over and over and getting no relief or results in the past.....we finally understood that this alternative was definitely in order.
Needless to say, it also takes a good insurance provider that agrees with alternative medicine and I am grateful that HMAA accepts and works with acupuncture and chiropractor providers. For more information about HMAA and Acupuncture click here.

I am a firm believer in alternative medicine - I 've never tried acupincture, but would do so without hesitation, Karen
Whatever it takes. I'd be reluctant to get the cortizone shots but the accupuncture appears to have worked for about 5,000 years.
Woo Hoo, There are probably very good reasons for both types of medicine in our lives. Drugs and surgery should always be the last resort and not the first choice because I think we could live longer with less long term complications. Though hospitals and medical service centers build and sustain their business on the revenue, we need to think through the process and readily available services we often depend on. I recall one alternative medicine practitioner telling me that cortisone is a steroid and over time, it has unintended consequences that I might not like very much. I think he was talking about about the c word, at least that is the way I took it. Over the centuries past, many ailments were successfully treated with these older methods, depending on the seriousness of the issue. My bother always seemed to have a black eye as I recall. My father rented leaches and they did the trick. Today, they are unheard of this country but as a youngster, I saw leach tanks in the local drug stores.
Sally,
'Manageable' is the key word in this post...We all have aches and pains, especially as we get older...Without my Chiropractor I wouldn't be able to function...He keeps me 'moving' and functional...!!!
And I agree with you...if you can seek 'alternatives' other than surgery or medicines...do it...!!!
Thanks, Fran
Sally, The healings I saw from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is what made me realize that ancient beliefs and systems work. I've used Acupunture and Amma Therapy (massage) and it's helped me a great deal....all naturally. I'm so glad you found this wonderful place and Diego and thrilled to hear your insurance covers it. Mine doesn't which is what keeps me from going more often.
Acupuncture has helped a lot for different things -- would be good if all insurance would cover natural type things.
Hi Sally
I know several people that has successfully used Acupuncture.
Good luck and success.
Lou Ludwig
I've been contemplating acupuncture for a couple of different issues lately. Your post may just have been the tipping point for me. The final test will be if our insurance will cover it. Thanks for the vote of confidence you shared.
So glad you found this provider and found relief. I know that it has been helpful for many things for friends including quitting smoking, losing weight, and even bringing on labor. I would try it for pain for sure.
I have a friend that swears by acupuncture and it seems to have truly helped him and his wife out a lot.
Wow! Acupuncture huh? That's amazing. I'd love to give it a shot "in the arm." LoL!
Sally I know of a lot of people that speak very highly of Acupuncture, my Dad was one of them. But I hate needles, and the thought of have someone put a bunch of them in me does not give me warm fuzzy's.
George: I loveeee the massage therapy :) And acupuncture needles you can't even feel. It's a tap tap and in. :)
Greg: It's all over the place...different points ya know.
JL: Us too!
Paddy: It is the ONLY thing that's helped for a lot of my aches and pains.
Carol: I believe...because it works. Just like anything else...it is not an instant gratification thing..have to work at it and continue.
Thanks Lou...
Carolin...yes it would be nice ...and it would also be nice if the insurance co's keep it on no matter what too.
Carole: I'm so happy Kaiser believes that there are alternatives to the standard practice of medicine.
Fran: Manageable is right. I have to live with much ....but manageable it is now :) I was a wreck when I first went.
William: The cortisone was the last resort....too much pain and starting to interfere with walking, sleep and blogging ;0
Lenn: thousands of years indeed. And of course the only time I go through anything (like the cortisone..is last resort.
Karen: I do believe....only through experience :)
Sally- I am going to get really transparent here- When I read your post tears of glee flowed down my face because I love you and to see you reach out for alternative health options makes me so happy for you. I am so passionate about no meds, no big pharma, etc., and when those I love see the light to healing, I am so thrilled.
