The New Windows 7.....and Me.....Happy Happy Happy

I'm sure you've all seen the commercials for soon to be released Windows 7 and then later on Vista will be just a distant memory. In the Windows 7 commercial the little girl is just as HAPPY as can be with Windows 7. Don't you just want to run out and buy the darn thing when it's a cute, cool or snazzy commercial?  And if this little girl can do all kinds of cool stuff...then so do I!

As my husband is a Microsoft Partner we have the operating system already and though my husband installed it on his gaming machine a bit ago, I had him back up my files today and then do the big wipe and reload on my pc with....yes, Windows 7.  Reloading is always a good thing once in awhile anyway. Makes for a smooth, clean reload and eliminating all the crap I accumulate along the way.

I've only been on my 'new' pc with Windows 7 for an hour, and though I rarely have any problems I'm loving the crisp clean reload and of course many more learning sessions coming on this new operating system.

The one thing I noticed right off the bat was the "Libraries" feature. EVERYTHING at your fingertips when you want to create a new folder in your library and don't want to toggle between My Documents etc. It's a quick shortcut and when I learn more I'll bring you more :)

I LOVE THE SNIPPING TOOL!(I didn't have it enabled on Vista Business for some odd reason....)

Before, I loved do the screen shots. But then I would have to crop the screen shot down to what I really wanted...and then I could insert that picture into my blog...... like the shot below. (I had to crop out one of my screens because screen shots would take a screen shot of both screens no matter what

Now with the snipping tool I can just drag my cursor and surround the PART of the screen shot I want and save directly to my pictures. No pasting to paint, saving to pictures and then having to go back and crop etc. It's just done!Just click on the 'start menu' and click on the  'snipping tool' ...drag the cursor around the area you want to 'snip' and then just save. Wow, how quick was that! Voila! ...the snipped part in picture one is the actual snipped part below on our featured list list on the dashboard of ActivRain.  Talk about crisp and clear.

Now....let me get back to learning from  little girl is just as HAPPY as can be with Windows 7 and I'll have a cool slide show like her :)  You'll be hearing more from me as I dabble some more.

Tim:There are always people who will complain about not being able to run certain software with xp, vista and I'm sure with Windows 7.  Secret is to take any store bought pc and immediately do a wipe and reload taking off all the proprietary junk that interferes with other software.

Or...like us...build your own.

Thanks Robert.

I'm glad I passed on Vista and still use XP Pro. I will need a new Office Pro soon as I'm still using the '03 version. Nice to hear someone likes the newest version as I'm due for a new Toshiba machine. This one is nearly 5 years old and my primary is 2. Still the best machines on the market today! I have older Toshibas that still function like new, all reloaded with XP Pro and Office Pro 2003.

Sally:  It sounds like Windows 7 is a pretty cool thing for you.  Wow... I admire your computer expertise.  You go, girl.

I have two computers with XP... and also fell into the trap of buying one with Vista... which I do NOT like at all.  Can this new Windows 7 be loaded onto my Vista machine ?  How do I do it ?  Will I have to wipe it clean... like you mentioned ?  And... does that wipe out all my files, too ?  Sheesh... I wish I knew how to do this stuff.

Woo Hoo, I knew you would writing this before anyone else. I have heard good things about it and I will upgrade my XP on the back end of the Mac when available here. I hope it makes IE work better. Mine still runs slow. Yet my MLS which uses IE, it runs fine. ??  But we were told not to download IE 8 yet, as it does not work with the MLS.

Have a great Saturday.

John: I used to have a Toshiba laptop and my husband immediately wiped and reloaded :) I ended up selling it to a fellow agent as in one year I used it only when the power went out lol

Karen: I've had all operating systems and no problems at all. I guess the trick is to keep up with the technology too. That can get expensive but my work and my husbands work both require ..... good stuff. :)  I had Vista on mine and just reloaded it..... I'd get someone professional to do it. It requires backing up everything...including Outlook files. You should be backing up your files to another drive (external) anyway. Believe me....the only reason I know is because that's my husbands job.  :) :)

Thanks for your insights, Sally! I usually wait a few months after a new operating system comes out before upgrading. That gives them time to work out some of the unexpected bugs and leaves me with less stress in the meantime. Will probably take a look at 7 after the first of the year.

"proprietary junk" is why I always have my computers custom made.  Have done so since about 1995.  Oh, I have a back-up Sony sitting on the floor in the corner for emergency when my PC needs repair, but so far, I'm quite satisfied with simple minded custom machines and no "proprietary junk".

Very helpful post Sally.

Well when I was shopping, I was told by several sales people that my laptop would come with a free upgrade to  7. Well had been 'having an attitude' with Mr. Bill Gates about this whole vista thing and decided to buy the laptop but wait until i heard the reviews on 7 before i upgraded so i wouldn't get stuck with yet another blunder. sooooo enough rambling from me. thanks for your post. you made me look forward to the brighter days and i will be upgrading as soon as it becomes available.

HI Sally - thanks for the input about Win7.  I have a new laptop with Vista 64 which runs surprisingly well.  I also have a desktop with Vista32 that seems to have all kinds of issues, craches, etc.  Quite a difference between the two computers.  I will exercise the option to get Windows 7 soon and make the conversion.

Thanks for mentioning the Snipping tool.  I didn't know it was a part of Vista!

Sally, I must admit I've hated Vista for a long, long time ... (but I hate PCs in general) ... but I'm happy to see that you're loving 7 (so far).

I miss my MAC and I have been wondering whether to go back to it, since this bugs/viruses/worms kind of stuff, never happens on a MAC, and I'm sick and tired of all the reboots and virus clean ups ...

... BUT after reading this, I may give 7 a try. :)

After 7 years, my laptop is beginning to show signs of slow death, and I know I will need a new one soon.  In looking over the Microsoft website, it appears version 7 is still 19 days away.  A new operating system, a new Internet Exporer, a new Office version... how much time will I need to devote to 'relearn' how to work all of this!

I passes on Vista and was an XP Pro user until I went to Mac last January.  I do have XP Pro installed on my virtual machine on the Macbook though ;-)

Oh, and when I did use PCs before my Mac conversion, I always reformatted the hard drive and did a fresh install of all programs (even when the machine was brand new) in order to remove all the bloatware that comes standard with PCs.

Hi Sally -- I use SnagIt for screen capture so if it's built right into the OS, then that should suffice for the majority of things or at least to make things more efficient.  I need a new PC, my current one is six years old and I'm starting to do video editing which is so slow, so I'm waiting for w7 to be released before I purchase a new one later this month.

Marcia: It's hard for me to understand all the problems everyone seems to have with Vista as the only problem I ever had was my few years old Canon color printer didn't work well with it. Since then, I upgraded to a laser color and also an all in one laser monochrome.

Jim: Again, only problem I had was the old printer.

Lenn: Yeah....we know what we're talking about. We have mine, my husband's gaming machine, a server and his apple laptop (with both operating systems) and funny...we rarely have any problems. It's that proprietary crap. "brand name wants you to use their brand name software". Again, it's not the machine...it's the MANY operators putting their junk on it lol.

Bryan: Yup ...it sounds good. Since writing this last night I found out my husband didn not enable the feature when installing Vista Pro on my pc. It was something you had to install the tablet pc stuff so he didn't. With Windows 7 you don't have to install any tablet pc stuff and it's right there on the start menu.

So glad to hear a good review of it!!  I'm getting ready to dump my Vista infested laptop, which has many other issues.  After reading all your comments, I bet Bloatware is number 1.  The first thing I get when it boots up, if it boots, is an error message with the HP Advisor.  Errors downloading updates, conflicts with graphic driver it came with.  I can't afford to go Mac (and half our real estate programs aren't mac-patible.  So I've been torn between the safety of XP and the unknown but promising 7.

Whichever I go, at least now I know - step 1, wipe and reload! Ha!

This sounds like a great program Sally. I had not heard about Windows 7. I wonder what this is going to cost to purchase. Any idea ?

Sally,

I'm ready to say good bye to Vista. It's been a big disappointment and I hope Windows 7 is everything they say it is.

Sally, I've not been thrilled with Vista so I'm excited to see a new choice.  Have you heard when it is supposed to be available.  Our son's computer is about to die and I would sure like to have this as the operating system.

I've never really had any problems with vista but hey I'm always happy to jump in and try something better :) I'd also like to wipe and reload but man that just sound scary (I'm not that techie!). ~Rita

I fought Vista tooth and nail....and now that I'm finally used to it.......here we go with Windows 7.....but definitely looking to try it out.....I'm with Rita on the wipe and re-load!

Thanks for the peak...  I am slowly being lured to the 'mac-side'.  We bought one for my son 2 years ago and he has never had a problem with it.  I usually have to wait at least 6 months to upgrade anything with microsoft because they are always sooo buggy when they first come out and no third party providers know how to 'play nice' with them when they are first released...it takes awhile for them to get intergrated.  The buzz about this product is exiting though, we shall see...

Wish we could stop the endless upgrades and just have one system that works for all appliances (computers).  Looking forward to the future.

Thanks for the heads up on W-7

Sally... I have a friend who works for Microsoft. Basically his job is to break it. He's worked on all versions since Windows 3.1... I crack up when I think about our conversations over the years. He's complained about every version... Talking to him a few months ago (he still had complaints) but he said v7 was the best yet and had to admit he actually liked it.

Good review but I think I will wait a bit before I go and buy it. I like my XP and usually wait for the bugs to get worked out of any op system.

Hi Sally. I like your review but I so do not like V7. Vista is such a RAM hog as well. I am glad that all of my computers have Windows XP. ~ Lana

IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY....

Sometimes change is pretty scarey....but if you didn't take a risk trying something new then how did you survive this market?????

Who knows....that trying something new may be  'MY FAVORITE MISTAKE'

Are you .....Strong Enough to see...that maybe "A change may do you good"?

Won't know unless you try.....

Sally, that sounds great. I have not graduated to Vista yet.  My laptop is 4 years old but I did just get a mini HP.  Thank you for sharing this info.
