Pearl Harbor Hawaii |US Navy Bone Yard of Decommissioned Vessels

While riding past the U.S. Navy ship "graveyard" located at Middle Loch in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (the Waipahu side of Pearl Harbor) I wondered how many ships were in this "graveyard". While researching I found out that this Middle Loch U.S. Navy ship "graveyard" is also known as a bone yard.

This Navy "Inactive" ship facility is just one of the three remaining bone yards for decommissioned vessels. This facility has been renamed about four times and is now known as the "Inactive Ships On-Site Maintenance Office".

The following information is of the remaining decommissioned ships in Middle Loch, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the bone yard, their type, dates of commission and decommission. You can click on the links to learn more about the ships.

My son was stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk  and it was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. The day the war broke out in Iraq he was aboard the USS Kitty Hawk in the Persian Gulf. It was March 19th and it was his birthday. He has since come home in 2006 and the USS Kitty Hawk sailed it's last voyage and participated in the RIMPAC 2008, The GEORGE WASHINGTON replaced the KITTY HAWK in Japan.  The USS Kitty Hawk continued on to Bremerton, Washington where it was decommissioned since January 31, 2009.

Picture below was taken on July 4th, 2008 while docked in between the RIMPAC 2008 excercises.

Your blog has demonstrated a wealth of American history about the Pearl Harbor graveyard.  I'm sure that not many people knew of its importance the our country.

Sally, this is very cool, I am a history buff and also my Dad served in the Navy in WWII and passed through Pearl Harbor on the way to the battlefront and thankfully when he returned home. Nice hyperlocal post!

My dad retired from the Navy in 1969 and was on the Consellation, Hancock and Enterprise...my son on the Kitty Hawk....My ex husband retired from the Air Force and my daughter married to Army. Talk about a variety of military lol.

Sally I found this really interesting.  I served for four years in the Navy, and had never heard of ship "graveyards" or "bone yards".

Sally - I had heard of this but now know so much more, thanks to you. My Dad was in teh Navy anbd WWI and spent time in Pearl Harbor.

You have to wonder if something could be done with these vessels that played such an important role. But maybe that's too costly.

George: I knew about graveyards in the deep ocean but nothing like a bone yard :)

Thanks Robert!  A safe return to your brother!

Jeff:  I do believe they use/sell scrap...and use it for something.....  I always see people around there.

Hi, Sally.  My husband's first ship is on your list, the USS Duluth LPD-6.  I'll have to tell him.  Larry was aboard that ship when our two sons were born - in fact, he was deployed to Vietnam until the older one was six months old.
