UPDATE! Shadow doing better!

I wrote this whole thing out and lost it...now I had to do it again.  I thought I would just post as a group post only and get a response....Hmmmm...

I am feeling very down today.  My doggie Shadow is very sick. (she doesn't act it though!) She went to the groomers last week and came home stressed out and urinated pure blood.  Rushed her to the vet. Many blood tests sent to the mainland.  Just got the results.  He blood platlets are supposed to be between 125 to 200 and hers are 24!  We take her back tomorrow for a follow up.  Everything seems normal now...she's on steroids and antibiotics but they can't figure out what's wrong.  The vet said keep her quiet because if she gets hurt she could bleed to death because her blood is not clotting....anyone heard of this?  I know you all aren't vets ...just wanted to know if anyone heard of this....(my kid's haven't given me any grandkids so I "saved" this english cocker spaniel 2.5 years ago......I really love my doggie. )

UPDATE:

 April 26, 2007  (6:30pm Hawaii Time)

Doggie's vet just called and said doggie's blood platlets are up to 211,000 (normal is 164,000 to 510,000 and hers was at 24 last week)  Needless to say, on steroids, antibiotics and pepcid...she is a psychotic hungry thirsty animal who keep me up at night because she can't sleep!  Follow up in two weeks....Anyway, she's a little better but have to watch. Vet believes stress sets off this thing that attacks her blood platlets...

You & Shadow are in my thoughts and prayers.  Several years ago, I had a dog who was severely anemic and had a very low platelet count.

Sally, You and shadow are in my prayers - I'm a newer pet parent (adopted a lab last summer from the SPCA) but I've seen the special place pets have in our families. Wish I could do something to make it better - you brighten up so many other peoples days around here.

Thanks Michelle!  The whole thing is that this happened before....not quite as severe....and when she went for her yearly check up in March all her tests were normal!

Hi Sally!  Shadow is in my prayers!  I am a huge animal lover and know how much it pains when our pets are sick.  I have never experienced this with any of my pets but I read up a little on it.  Aspirin can cause this to happen so hopefully she didnt get into a bottle on accident.  I also found a condition on line:

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/thrombocytopenia-in-dogs/page1.aspx

Maybe you can ask your vet if that is a possibility.  Make sure to update us on how Shadow is doing.

Inga:  This is exactly what the vet said she may have.  She had the bruised gums, the spots on her tummy...(they're all gone now) and on steroids and antibiotics...just like that article said.  She is going in tomorrow for follow up blood tests (have to be sent to the mainland again because they don't have this in depth thing to do it here).  No aspirin.  Vet doesn't even know what is causing this...never had a tick or flea and strictly a house dog.  Has her heart worm pill and flea stuff on her back every month.  This is just a freak thing. Her year check up was fine in March.  Will let you know tomorrow. Darn I'm worried. You just don't know how much my husband and I love her.

Sally, we've had some big health scares with our pets, too.  One of our cats nearly died last year and I spent a small fortune at the vet.  (Really should have that insurance!)  I know the feeling, and I've said a prayer for you guys, too.  Good luck with the results of the tests, I hope you can fix this easily!!

Sally I lost a pet Dog named Minnie last July that  I had for fourteen years. It was very hard. I didn't think I would get another dog for awhile but ended up with one  month later. Her name is Raisin. They certainly fill our hearts with love don't they! My prayers are with you.

Posted by Danny Smith (DISCOVER TEXAS HOMES) over 11 years ago

Sarah> Little late for insurance....on this part...we surely are looking into it (not many around here) as it is minimal.  Our vet said they don't cover for anything she's had in the past...ear infections etc.  So far this year it has cost a small fortune...especially since last week!  Thanks and will let everyone know as she progresses  (I'm going to stay positive) /

Danny:  Raisin sound like a cutie...what kind?

Sally-Did you receive a "DDS" when you saved her (Doggie Disclosure Statement)?  If so, what did it say in paragraph 2(C) under "List any items of deficiency that would influence an average persons decision to buy this doggie"?  I hope your dog will be just fine!  Aloha!
Posted by 1SG (Ret.) David Kucic, President and Owner (Hawaii Military Realty, Inc.) over 11 years ago
David:  Funny.  We got her out of the newspaper and rode out to Maile and literally saved her from a traumatized life!  she is more like a kid,...you know?  Oh, yeah....you won't get a dog. (and doubt you will if you are requiring a DDS!) Ha!

Took doggie to the vet (actually, I had to meet a client and hubby took her). We'll get the follow up tests back in two days.  (at least the follow up appointments and blood work are 1/2 price ....geez)

Sally, how scarey! Is this a normal groomer that you took her to? I hope the vet can figure out whats wrong quick. I know how frightning this all is. Almost lost my youngest kitty last Jan, but it was worth every penny to save him. I had a black cocker named Lady Shadow, she's with my ex now, miss her terribly, give your Shadow a gentle hug for me. I'll check back for updates for sure.

Hey Sally, My hubby said maybe it came in contact with another animal at the groomer (or somewhere).  One of his cats had Leukemia and he battled for atleast a year with him-he heard about that one day when his cat was getting treatments.  I sure hope the second test is better! Give him kisses for me. He's adorable!

Lysa:  Normal groomer....stress kicks it off (second time this happened but this time is severe....the last time they said urinary tract infection....and that cleared up)  I love my cocker...she really is like a kid..you know?

Stephanie:  Look at the link in the beginning....it's something similar...but they can't figure out how.  And she is a she....ha!

Does the Vet think the crisis is over?

Ginger/Roger: We go on Wednesday again for follow up blood tests.  She is thinking that stress sets off this abnormality ....and we may have to have a groomer come to the house.  They can't figure what exactly is causing this.
Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, (RA) AHWD CRS ePRO OAHU HAWAII REAL ESTATE (Liberty Homes) over 11 years ago
Sally, I am so sorry to read about Shadow.  I will pray that all turns out well on Wednesday.  I am not a vet, but have had many dogs and have never experienced anything like what you are describing.  I will check back for Wednesday's update and pray for you all.

Theresa:  I will let everyone know....funny thing is...she doesn't seem sick...I noticed though. On steroids and antibiotics she isn't growling at us....hmmmm.  She's too busy running around acting all hungry (the steroids must have gotten her metabolism soaring!) and acting all hungry thirsty psycho.  She was up last night knocking her food bowl around so hubby got up and gave her a little dry dog food...she never eats dry food alone!

Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, (RA) AHWD CRS ePRO OAHU HAWAII REAL ESTATE (Liberty Homes) over 11 years ago
Sally, I'm glad the immediate crisis is over and hope you get good news soon.  Both of you are are my prayer list still.

Sally, funny thing is my husband behaves the same way on steroids (up in the middle of the night banging dishes for food).  LOL

Theresa:  I think my husband was acting like the dog was doing more than what she was so he could raid the frig....kudos and milk...and not even on steroids...haha!

Shadow is a cutie -hope she is all ok now. I have a horse with Lymes Disease & it is hard to see her hurting -she is on IV antibiotics and steroids.
Posted by Kathleen Lordbock, Keller Williams Realty Professionals (Keller Williams Realty Professionals) over 11 years ago
Hope your horsie will be okay...I have no idea what that is...just like I had no clue about low blood platlets...and now that I look back on all this I still didn't see any signs....except for this time with all the blood in her urine.

Our little Arab mare had to be put down tonight from the Lymes.  It is a woodtick borne disease.

I'm planting a lilac bush on her grave tomorrow.

Wow, came to this late...did not get to read all of these, but...the skeptic in me asks: same groomer, same problem?  Did the vet mention anything like poison or just plain bad treatment  I came home early from a trip several years back. to find the groomer/border had left my dog with a leather leash at about 6 inches strapped to a pole.  She had annoyed this "sweet" caretaker, who was embarassed to get caught.  The dog had managed to chew through about 1/4 of her leather leash attempting to escape.. in th "5" minutes she had been left out in the room.  I think the dog had behaviour issues for months after.  She goes to our current groomer like a baby..but it took years for her to separate easily again.

Hi everyone!

Today we got the results for Shadow's blood test...still in normal range although lower than two weeks before...which the vet said could go up and down.  She gets to drop off one half tab of steroids to every other day...and she is slowly turning back to "normal'....she hasn't played with all her babies for over a month and a half...but yesterday we bought a new one and boy...was she proud of her new "baby"...carried it around for half an hour until it was soggy!

Kathleen:  I got back here pretty late....Ive actually been updating on the Update #4 in the title....but sorry to hear about your mare. I'm not familiar with Lymes so have no clue...I'll go read on the internet...I know how it feels when an animal passes away... Victoria said it well....

Victoria:  After reading extensively on the subject I ran across an article that said low blood platlets more common in cocker spaniels....the vet is not sure but believes stress offsets her "condition".

We changed groomers to this new one because our dog was so traumatized she would not even let us touch her for a couple of days...she loves this oriental lady....and comes home all happy. Checked with her on shampoo....same one we use at home.

Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, (RA) AHWD CRS ePRO OAHU HAWAII REAL ESTATE (Liberty Homes) over 11 years ago

Kathleen,

My heart goes out to you for the loss of you precious mare. I did not know Lymes affected horses too.

I got the Bullseye rash when we lived in NY. Noticed it right away and got treated, but i know folks who have suffered for years after Lyme went undetected in the early stages.

(((( ))))))
