Would you believe this giant golf ball traveled 4,000 miles around the Pacific Ocean between December of 2007 and April of 2008? Well, it's not really a golf ball like those you're thinking of after the Big Sony Open this last week here at Waialae Country Club.
Up on the H-1 freeway off ramp I saw IT 'back in port' this past Saturday. (Actually, I found out it came back to port on the 3rd) We got off on the Waimalu exit and with excitement of a blogger gone wild wanting to take a picture specifically for this post I order my husband to Blaisdell Park. I walk briskly to ocean's edge to get a few shots of this GIANT floating station along with a few other shots.
This is the SBX-1 Seabased X-Band Radar and a recent test this past December proved that this was the first intercept test in which data was combined from the SBX and other sensors providing tracking data. Boeing's chief engineer, Norm Tew said, "This test was an important milestone for the Sea-Based X Band Radar, a powerful, mobile sensor.
The SBX-1 comes back to Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii once a year for repairs and though I only know a little about it; the one thing I'm sure about is that it is a vital part of our enhance missle defense.
In any case, isn't it beautiful?

I'm sure glad you disclosed that it was a radar dome - I was thinking we were about to see golf get hit with a steroid scandal of its own! LOL
... certainly not something you see every day :o) .. pretty cool !
Cheers !
Sheldon
Kent: No kidding. Can you imagine the stories flying around lol!
Hey Sheldon: This is the first time I was able to get close and snap a couple shots....nice day too. :)
Aloha Sally,
How interesting, who know for sure what the heck this is?
It is kind of cool looking!
Yes. That is beautiful! It looks so cool. It's like a piece of floating art. And to think it's all about radars.
blogger gone wild? LOL Sally. I can relate. I got excited at a truckload of tomatoes yesterday. It was SOME truckload though. he he
I would rather have my tax dollars spent on that, than bailing out a bunch of banks with zero accountability.
Hi Sally:
And look...it's sitting on one of those special tees!
I could probably hit that one straight...even with a small club.:)
That must be quite a sight when it is floating around in the ocean.
Pretty cool Sally. It does look like a big golf ball sitting in the ocean:)
Interesting Sally Thanks for sharing this.
Sally,
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing this!
Sally - You sure got my attention with the golf reference since my boyfriend instructs golf and has a custom shop that makes beautiful wedges. Guess who worked in the shop for a few hours last weekend....you guessed it! He put me to work -
That is a very cool picture. Thank you!
I am glad we have missle defence even if it is disguised as a huge scary golf ball!
Sally - that is very cool, and I have never seen anything like that. Great photo and thanks for sharing.
Hey Lynda! I just thought wow.
Tony/Darcy: It is pretty cool :)
Lisa: I saw pics in motion....it moves!
Maggie: I agree....a bunch of beautiful tomatoes would have peeked my interest too lol.
Kevin: Hmmmmm.
Toula: lol! That was pretty funny :)
Neal: lol. betcha could too!
Ann: I have yet to see that part...only pictures :)
Bill: It sure does huh?
Dorie: Okay.
Barbara: And you enjoyed every bit. :)
Tony: You're welcome. :)
Caren: Scarey? lol. I think it sure stands out though :)
Sharon: Okay..thanks!
Too funny! I just read an article in a local newspaper where a man found a giant golf ball in his front yard....it was big enough that the kids were playing on and in it. I think it must have come from a miniature golf course, but, the article was about how it got there and if the homeowner would be responsible if a child got hurt. I am still wondering "who put it there?"
That is really cool and I have to add that it sorta looks like a Dinosaur Egg! You always have the most interesting pictures (and "home" videos)!
Neat picture! I can understand going back to get a photo! Someone else already said it - I could probably hit that one! (but not far) I enjoy your photos!
Mary
Sally can you imagine how big a golf club it would take to hit that thing???
I will bring a nine iron. I bet this is one ball I can't loose!
That is very cool. I like the idea of thinking of it as a giant golf ball. Wonder what Tiger Woods would use to hit it off the T?
