UPDATE#4....Virtual Tour of My Dog Shadow

On March 31, 2007 I wrote my first post on our doggie Shadow...My English Cocker Spaniel "Shadow"

On April 25th, 2007 I wrote a post about how worried I was about our doggie Shadow. ......

She went to the groomers last week and came home stressed out and urinated pure blood.  Rushed her to the vet. Many blood tests sent to the mainland.  Just got the results.  He blood platlets are supposed to be between 125 to 200 and hers are 24!  We take her back tomorrow for a follow up.  Everything seems normal now...she's on steroids and antibiotics but they can't figure out what's wrong.  The vet said keep her quiet because if she gets hurt she could bleed to death because her blood is not clotting....anyone heard of this?  I know you all aren't vets ...just wanted to know if anyone heard of this....(my kid's haven't given me any grandkids so I "saved" this english cocker spaniel 2.5 years ago......I really love my doggie. )

On April 26, 2007  (6:30pm Hawaii Time) I gave the following update:

Doggie's vet just called and said doggie's blood platlets are up to 211 (normal is 164 to 510 and hers was at 24 last week)  Needless to say, on steroids, antibiotics and pepcid...she is a psychotic hungry thirsty animal who keep me up at night because she can't sleep!  Follow up in two weeks....Anyway, she's a little better but have to watch. Vet believes stress sets off this thing that attacks her blood platlets...

Today is May 08, 2007 and now that I have this virtual tour thingy going

I decided to do one of our Shadow whom we love so much!

Tomorrow is her follow up blood test appointment.

I hope you all enjoy this virtual tour of Shadow as much as we did!

Mother's Day is coming up!  Mother's Day Milestones! Mom/No Smoking/and Dori

May 09, 2007!       My husband took doggie to the vet this am...will get blood test results in a couple of days...vet said she is doing better and gained 2 lbs. We get to lower her steroid pills to 1/2 per day (she started on 3/4 pill twice a day!) and have to slowly wein her off.  If it happens again then this may be  a lifelong ailment.  Will keep you all posted!

May 10, 2007   Just got a call from the vet.  Shadow's platlets are up to 317! (she started at 24...regular is 164 to 510!)    See the vet in two weeks and if she's still doing better than get to lower her steroids to 1/2 every other day.  I just hate seeing her moping around and not her happy self.  Kind of weird ...she stands and stares at stuff for a long time....vet said when she gets lowered again it should get better.  I really hope this isn't a lifelong thing......

Shadow is a real cutie Sally.  The video shows how much she means to you.  It's like looking at someone's baby photos, or a grandmas brag book.  Glad she's doing better now.

Sally,

What type of flea preventive do you use?  A vet put Revolution on my dog Alexandria with out my permission and she almost died.  Her platlets did the same thing. http://www.thedogplace.org/Articles/Lee_The_Horrible_Odyssey.htm

It wouldn't hurt to read this, it may help.  I will pray for Shadow bless her heart.

Same Advantage topical stuff..same heartworm stuff...only different grooming place...the regular place is getting renovated...same groomer just different place...and she just had her yearly checkup the month before and all was normal!
Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, RA, CRS, HAWAII Real Estate & Relocations (Century 21 Liberty Homes) about 5 years ago

Sally, I think your dog is very cute. I never went through a blood issue with a dog, but I have with horses. There are a number of possibilities. So you have to see what the vet says.

Why don't you ask him about a blood tonic to add to Shadow's diet to build up her RBC. How is the white count?

Sally

Pleeeease read the article I sent to you.  I'm no vet but it sounds like there was something your dog got into that was like a poison.  It took the vets a year to find out that Alexandria's liver had been effected.  Although she rallied at times she was never the same. The liver is a wonderful organ, if given half the chance it will recover from almost anything. If we could have caught it sooner it would have had a different out come.

I keep thinking if I hadn't been so trusting and had changed vets that maybe I could have had so many more "good" years with her.  Although she hung in there for two more years they weren't really good years for her.  I'm not an alarmist I just hate to see you get hurt.

Posted by Roberta Lee-Norco Corona Riversid Homes For Sale (Century 21 Olde Tyme) about 5 years ago

Steve:  Her platlets are back up to 317, her white count is pretty normal again and she goes back in another week and a half for follow up.

Roberta:  The link you sent would not open....I went to the site but could not find it.

Once you are in the site go to "dog care" on the left side of the page.  It will take you to a list of articles.  On the right side of the page about 3/4 of the way down you will see "The Horrible Odtssey" There you go.  Let me know if this works.

Posted by Roberta Lee-Norco Corona Riversid Homes For Sale (Century 21 Olde Tyme) about 5 years ago

Roberta:  I did read...my doggie exhibited no signs of any of this...she didn't even appear sick...nor was she after ....anyway, vet said it is like this:  http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_immune-mediated_thrombocytopen.html  although she is having a hard time figuring out what may have caused it.  She had all these symptoms when we rushed her to the vet. The gums were bruised the little red spots on her belly...the whole nine yards....She said the groomer and the stress may have set off this underlying problem....all we can do is see what happens...all I know is in March she had normal blood everything at her yearly checkup....last month the groomer and came home and this....funny thing is she had dark urine the time before but it was a urinary tract infection....

Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, RA, CRS, HAWAII Real Estate & Relocations (Century 21 Liberty Homes) about 5 years ago

Sally

Read the info on the site above and understand.  I am glad that she didn't have any of the symptoms that Alex did.  I just wanted you to make sure.  In so many ways dogs and small children are alike.  The most profound is they can't tell us what they are feeling or what is wrong.  We have to play the game of elimination.  Not only is that hard on the dog but it is costly for the parents (owners).  I spent well over $8,000. on Alex, but she was worth every penny and more.  I know you feel the same way.  Do let me know how she continues to do, I am interested.  Have a great day and I' so sorry to have taken so much of your time. :)

Posted by Roberta Lee-Norco Corona Riversid Homes For Sale (Century 21 Olde Tyme) about 5 years ago
Roberta:  I sure found that out!  My doggie didn't show anything except what the vet found and this all popped up...didn't notice the little red spots and we are always playing and rolling her over and patting her tummy.  No worries...it's not taking any time that I am not spending mingling with everyone here! I appreciate you caring!
Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, RA, CRS, HAWAII Real Estate & Relocations (Century 21 Liberty Homes) about 5 years ago

I'm glad Shadow's blood count is back to normal, I'm sure you be monitoring her blood. If it fluctuates, try to figure out what set it off or what changed in her life. You may want to look into some specialty diet for the type of symptoms she's showing, see what the vet says. Rub her belly for me.

Posted by Steven Turetsky-Home, Building, EIFS Inspector (Comprehensive Building Inspections & Consultants) about 5 years ago
Aww....that's nice.  She sure isn't the same on steroids...a little better now that cut a little down...but not the happy chase after her babies kind of doggie still.  She did get on the bed and come crawl on my chest last night....it's been three weeks with none of that...I almost cried.
Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, RA, CRS, HAWAII Real Estate & Relocations (Century 21 Liberty Homes) about 5 years ago

All of what went on just happened, I'm sure once she's (I'm assuming Shadow is a girl) stabilized, the meds will change and she will be fine. You know, I'm no longer the "chases after the kids kind of doggie" either. Well, sometimes I still am. I glad to hear she crawled up on the bed, I guess that means she's beginning to feel herself again.

Posted by Steven Turetsky-Home, Building, EIFS Inspector (Comprehensive Building Inspections & Consultants) about 5 years ago
Steve:  Shadow is surely a girlie....you know, the more and more I read up on Cocker Spaniels it seems a lot of stuff she's had already in the past they are known more to have it....the ear infections, urinary tract infections, the eye boogers...stuff like that.

Hi everyone!

Today we got the results for Shadow's blood test...still in normal range although lower than two weeks before...which the vet said could go up and down.  She gets to drop off one half tab of steroids to every other day...and she is slowly turning back to "normal'....she hasn't played with all her babies for over a month and a half...but yesterday we bought a new one and boy...was she proud of her new "baby"...carried it around for half an hour until it was soggy!

Hi Roberta:  Did you read my update above your comment?

Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, RA, CRS, HAWAII Real Estate & Relocations (Century 21 Liberty Homes) almost 6 years ago

Hey Sally,

Great to hear Shadow is doing better. Do you have any clues as to why her blood count went off the charts to begin with? What does the vet think happened?

I also carry my toys around in my mouth too. Don't you just hate when they get all soggy?

Keep us posted.

How did you make and post the movie?

Posted by Steven Turetsky-Home, Building, EIFS Inspector (Comprehensive Building Inspections & Consultants) almost 6 years ago

Not a clue...did read that cocker spaniels are known to have this problem...along with ear infections and leaky eye boogies. yuk.

And you just leave my doggie's toys alone...get your own!

Sally

Just a brief family insight.  When my children were growing up I would talk about the time they would be married and I would have grandchildren.  My children knew how much I love babies and children.  I even stop and talk to all of the children I see at the mall or when I'm grocery shopping.  So, my children grow up and go off on their own and (I have 2) one by one they inform me that I will not be a grandmother.  It broke my heart.  But hay it's their life and who am I to tell them (I didn't and I won't). Now they are having a blast telling me about the progress of "my grandchildren."  :)  LOL  They have gotten dogs (puppies) and I can see they should have had children.  They are great parents.  Now instead of being called mom, it's grandma.  Thank you for the compliment and I will gladly take the role of "Auntie."  :)

Well, my son just got out of the Navy last year....says he can't afford a girlfriend and is going to school this fall....my daughter just left her husband in Dec. and filing for divorce. Hmm...I guess they need to get a puppy or something.

I have two sons, 13 and 15. I am very proud of them and we are very close to each other. I would also love to be a grandparent one day. With G-D's help that day will come. Who knows, perhaps one day your children will surprise you. Stranger things have happened.

June 19, 2007- Shadow is back on an increased level of steroids. Not as bad as when we first found out but still a lot. At least she kinda of acts like she knows us...and still plays. whew!  If her platelets go up again the vet is thinking it may be some sort of infection and will put her on antibiotics again
